Online trap
If you do not offer a mail-in option for race registration, do not charge an extra fee for online registration, since you haven't given runners a choice. Your event should pay the online fee.
If that doesn't fit your budget, then increase the entry fee to cover your cost. The end result will be the same, but runners won't feel like they were trapped.
P.S. You should offer a mail-in option so people who can't or won't register online can still participate in your event.

I can not believe how many races are charging the processing fee for online registration. How about the trend to make you search for the price? AND THEN tack on the processing fee! Please keep evangelizing this.
Thanks for the comment, Kent. We think races benefit from paying the online fee themselves. It makes it easier to get entries and runners don't feel trapped, tricked, or soaked for extra money. (We pay the fee for members who join online).
