What is a sponsor?
In fund-raising, a sponsor is usually a supporter who has contributed more than the requested gift amount.
In running, a sponsor is not a supporter and is not making a contribution. A sponsor is entering into a business relationship with an event and is paying for marketing entitlements.
That's why it is important for events to customize proposals so they address the individual needs of prospective sponsors.
It's a business deal, not a donation.
