Attracting more runners

Registration increased at many marathons and distance events in 2009, despite the slumping economy.

Some shorter distance races also attracted strong fields.  The Great Race 10k, in Pittsburgh PA, for example, fell just short of a record registration.

Wherever, and whenever, you plan a race, you must be able to answer these questions if you want to attract runners:

How will runners benefit from participating in the race?

What kind of experience can they expect?

What will the race offer them?

Will the race experience be unique?

Can they get the same experience at another race?  At a different type of event?

What will they miss if they just sleep in that morning?

Think of why runners should register for your race, not why you want them to register.  Make the most of your assets - distance, date, location, course design, event amenities, and anything else you think will be attractive to them.

Remember, the race is for the runners - not for you or your organization.
