Too many 5k races

Running organizations often complain about too many 5k races and not enough longer distance events.

More runners favor 5ks and like having a choice of events in which they can register.

When establishing a new event, decide which is more important - attracting more runners or offering something less available.

A 5k may draw a larger field right away, but a 10k or longer distance may fill a niche and develop a loyal following over the long term.

Don't try to achieve both goals by offering a 5k and a 10k.  You may end up with a fractured marketing message and two poorly attended events.
