No more beer

The University of Wisconsin has ended its long-standing sponsorship deals with MillerCoors and Anheuser-Busch.  UW wanted to take a stand against binge drinking.

Other colleges have opposed sponsorship deals that linked beer companies with students and the school community.

Running events involving schools have long refused beer sponsors.  Others have talked about doing the same but worried about loss of income and the absence of a post-race drink that many runners want.

Just like any other deal, you have to decide if the sponsor is a good match for the event.

The 50 Hecto May 8, 2010 -5k is considering offering beer after our event. All proceeds go to raise money for a school K-8. We are attempting to create a festival -like atmosphere after the race. I do not consider drinking 2 beers binge drinking. Alcohol is part of our society and everything in moderation.

Then serve beer. It's all about being appropriate. UW and other schools want to send a message that alcohol is not appropriate and should not be part of our society. That may not be the case with your race.
