Dick Beardsley
I usually don't care to listen to motivational speakers. Many try to "inspire" by weaving elaborate tales around a small nugget of truth, and employing manipulative techniques to influence listeners.
A big exception to this tactic is Dick Beardsley, a down-to-earth storyteller who relates his 26.2 mile "Duel in the Sun" against Alberto Salazar at the 1982 Boston Marathon.
He doesn't utilize any manipulative techniques. He just tells his story - and what a story it is! Even if you are a slow runner or have never run a marathon, you'll identify with his feelings during the race. When he's finished, you'll want to charge outside and run.
Beardsley is speaking at Playmakers, in Lansing MI, on March 3. If you get a chance to hear him then, or at another time, it will be worth it.
By the way, many runners do like motivational speakers. Competitive runners, in particular, often feel they are already doing everything possible to maximize their physical abilities. They feel that honing their mental capabilities, as well, will help improve their racing performance.
Thanks to Michigan Runner for alerting us to Beardsley's appearance.
