Always send a press release ON RACE DAY announcing the winners of your race. The event will no longer be news in a couple of days. Press releases should be timely and include the information each particular news outlet wants.
Large circulation dailies usually are interested only in the overall male and female winners. Local newspapers often like to receive lists of age group winners so they can select competitors from their areas to highlight or even interview.
The Duchess County Classic, in Wappingers Falls NY, earned a brief, post-race mention in a local newspaper. Don't minimize the value of short news items. They help maintain public awareness of your event and provide winners with something extra to remember.
