Just a mile
If you want to attract people to a one-mile race, make it the main event. Don't tack it on to a 5k or 10k.
The State Street Mile, in Rockford IL, offers an event for runners of all levels. Open, Masters, Youth, and Kids competitions run separately and some of the fastest Illinois times have been recorded here. Since it's only a mile, it doesn't take long to run, compile results, and present awards.
Entrants also receive a free pass to a local water-theme park, so the event is not just about running fast.
