Women's races

Many women enjoy women-only races because the winners receive attention that eludes them when faster men are running, and they don't have to worry about getting elbowed out of the finish chutes by men or getting stuck behind male food hogs in the refreshment line.

Although some men do compete, the field is largely female, with the event structured and marketed in accordance with women's interests.  Gender-sterotyping can be avoided (no reference to "girls" or "chicks" - the proper word is "women") without eliminating female-oriented amenities. Still, some events display such a habit.

The Zooma Women's Racing Series, with events in Annapolis MD and Atlanta GA, offers wine tastings, mini-spa treatments, demos, and shopping at a post-race expo, in an effort to lure infrequent runners to the race.

Running clubs that offer women-only events, or separate gender competition, usually focus on the running, since that's what they're selling.
