Lots of awards
It's customary to present awards to the overall male and female finishers and to the top three finishers in each age group and Clydesdale division. Some races do even more.
The Steamboat Classic, in Peoria IL, presents awards to the top 25 overall finishers in its 4m and 15k events. The top three age group winners also receive awards.
The Park Ridge Charity Classic 5k, in Park Ridge IL, awards not just the top three, but the top one-third of each age group, based on the number of finishers the previous year.
Fast runners who aren't fast enough to win awards, really like races that recognize their performances. If you want to attract more fast runners, offer awards that more of them can win.
