Guaranteed entries
It helps to have a popular race. The ING New York City Marathon conducts a multi-tiered application process to handle the multitudes that want to enter the race.
To enable members of the New York Road Runners to participate, the race has created a 9+1 Guaranteed Entry Program, requiring completion of nine qualifying events plus volunteer service in at least one.
Most races don't have to worry about people not being able to apply. Still, it's always helpful to see how race directors address problems that affect their events.
