Scenery
Races usually try to make the best of the topography in their areas. Hills, streams, parks, even streets and running paths, can provide pleasant views for runners.
One race that succeeded, the Mount Desert Island Marathon, in Bar Harbor ME, was named "most scenic in North America" by ESPN.
Urban events usually don't have the visual advantages of races with rugged terrain. Still, some runners enjoy running in downtown streets (because they never have the chance) or trod through residential areas lined with attractive or unusually designed homes.
Regardless of your locale, identify the most scenic vistas available to your race, and incorporate them into the course. Runners will appreciate it.
