Sponsor banners
The Boston Marathon will display its sponsors on start and finish line banners for the first time in its 112 year history.
That may not be revolutionary to many races that already place sponsor names and logos on a slew of materials. But it demonstrates the reliance of events - even large, commercially successful events - on sponsorship income.
Start and finish line banners will be viewed in television and photo coverage and will reinforce the extensive marketing already carried out by sponsors through their race participation.
It's refreshing to know there are races that don't want to over-commercialize. Allowing sponsors to benefit from start and finish line visibility is a smart move, though. It's not selling out.
