Olympic problems

The Chicago Olympic Games public relations machine is churning, with a new survey showing an increase in the number of Chicagoans supporting the 2016 Olympic bid (I'd like to see what questions were asked and how they were phrased).

Except for politicians, corporations, and contractors, though, Olympic enthusiasm has not yet taken hold.  In fact, many people – especially those living in and near Olympic-staging areas – are opposed to the games coming to Chicago.

Political leaders have begun the process of silencing community leaders who may make public, anti-Olympic statements.  An effort to build home team support – ala Bears, Bulls, White Sox, Cubs, Blackhawks – is underway.

Running events may experience a problem not mentioned in the press.  Many races will have to be rescheduled or canceled during the Olympic Games.  The city will not be able to release police for traffic control duties and events that might interfere with Olympic activities – including spectator travel – will have to be displaced.

No race can compete with the global audience drawn to the Olympics.  Even long-standing events will have to play second fiddle to the international games.   A blackout of special events was imposed when the World Soccer Cup came to Chicago, and even the Tall Ships exhibit forced a last-minute rerouting of a premier, Chicago race (the second time the event was bumped as race day approached).

So be prepared for a disruption of local running activities.  You won't have a choice.
