New marathon in Illinois

We'll find out if there is a market for a spring marathon in the Land of Lincoln.  The Illinois Marathon, inaugurated by producers of the Fargo Marathon, in Fargo ND, will take place April 25, 2009 in Champaign IL and Urbana IL.

The 26.2 mile race will wind through the twin cities and end on the 50-yard line of the University of Illinois stadium.

Champaign-Urbana is an easy two-hour drive south of Chicago and boasts the second largest media market in Illinois (third largest if you count St. Louis MO).

Nearby marathons competing for the springtime market in Chicago include:  Lake Geneva Marathon in Lake Geneva WI, Mad City Marathon in Madison WI, Sunburst Marathon in South Bend IN, and Spirit of St. Louis Marathon in St. Louis MO.

The Second Wind Running Club, in Champaign IL, has not posted any information about the event.

I think this event has great potential. I am tired of the big city hassle and expense! Champaign/Urbana is flat and friendly for runners....expecting a big crowd in year #1. Good luck Illinois Marathon!!

Planning for the Illinois Marathon is ongoing. Second Wind Running Club is 100% behind this effort and is very well represented on the organizing committee. More information on their website and newsletters will be available as we continue to plan. Registration for all of the events opens on June 1, 2008.
