Technical problems

More than 2,000 participants in the New York City Marathon were given incorrect finishing times due to "frequency interference" on the computerized chips used by runners.

In fact, the Boston Marathon is allowing the affected runners to estimate their own results to meet qualifying times for that race.

Computerized chips are very helpful in timing large events where many people finish at the same time.  They are not always necessary in small races, where traditional finish line systems are usually adequate.  Use of the chip, though, eliminates the need for finish line chutes.

Technology is not perfect.  If you use the chip, talk to your timing company about a back-up plan in the event the chip malfunctions.
