Getting dirty
As more runners develop the ability to complete marathons and other distance events, some race directors are finding unusual ways to provide runners with a different sort of challenge.
Races that force runners to endure cold, wet, muddy conditions are becoming more popular. Dances with Dirt, in Pinckney and Hell MI, and the Cross Country Challenge, in Gilberts IL design courses through streams and muddy terrain.
The somewhat resurrected Zoy Run, in Warren Dunes State Park near Sawyer MI, traverses sand dunes, rivers, and other unpleasant terrain, much to the delight of organizers and hardy competitors.
If the eccentricities of running appeal to you, first determine if you can tap into a market of runners seeking unusual racing venues. Registration numbers will be smaller, but participants may gladly trade traditional race amenities for the fun and challenge of a decidedly off-beat outing.
