Feed the runners
Runners expect a technically well-managed race with efficient registration, ample supply of t-shirts, accurate distances and split times, well-staffed water stations, effective traffic control, and accurate results, just to name a few.
An abundance of food, though, will linger in runners' memories for a very long time.
The Hartford Strawberry Run 5k, in Hartford MI, provided a free pancake breakfast to all runners and walkers. The Roselle Run for the Roses 5k, in Roselle IL, served slices of deep-dish pizza after the race. Other events have served pasta, cinnamon rolls, giant cookies, crepes, ethnic specialities, and numerous other goodies for post-race nourishment.
Good food won't make up for errors in course management, but it will add to runners' enjoyment and increase their desire to return next year.
