Cold weather shelter
As the weather becomes crisp, it's very important to have sheltered areas for pre-race and post-race activities.
The Westchester Veterun 5k/10k, in Westchester IL, provides a heated tent for race participants. The Lincolnwood Turkey Trot 5k/10k, in Lincolnwood IL, keeps a toasty fire burning in a park district shelter near the start/finish line.
Other races may use fieldhouses, schools, or other facilities to protect runners, volunteers, and race materials from the cold. Don't try to save money by braving the elements. One midwestern race was caught without a tent on a rainy morning and moved registration into the men's room (ugh!).
So, take precautions and be preapred for wind, cold, rain, snow, and other weather problems.
