Lots of awards

One way to attract more runners is to offer more awards.  Five-year age groups produce more award winners than ten-year age groups.  Clydesdale divisions may yield up to 48 more winners (if you establish the standard weight divisions).

The Route 66 5k Run, in Wildwood MO, presents awards to the top five finishers in each age group.  The Park Ridge Charity Classic 5k, in Park Ridge IL, awards the top one-third of each age group (but always the top 3 finishers).

You can give an award to the middle finisher.  That's a nice way to recognize the average runner.  You can award the oldest and youngest finishers, the first finisher from your town, the first finisher wearing a particular shirt, hat, shoes, socks, or anything else.

Giving more awards creates more winners.  Everybody wants to win something!

I like your ideas listed. We had a 7 year old run our 5K and she actually beat several people! We award tiles with artwork on them that the students in out HS art class produce. I was so impressed by this young lady's spunk we had one made just for her! Middle finisher? 4 more awards M/F, 5K/10K. Not a bad idea. Youngest and oldest sounds good although a lot of times in our event the oldest is typically the only one in their age group and wins there as well! Anything to boost interest is a good thing.
