Citizens only
In case you didn't know, the Detroit Free Press Marathon is an international event, crossing the USA/Canada border between Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario.
Federal law requires those crossing the border to prove U.S. citizenship. When picking up race packets, runners must show a driver's license and a certified copy of their birth certificate, OR a valid United States passport.
This is a big step forward from Race Director Patricia Ball's report at the February Race Director training in Livonia MI, when she said the Department of Homeland Security wanted to check each runner's passport at the border. Obviously, a compromise was devised.
Sometimes, government relations covers more than just which streets can be closed for a race.
