A Race with a Theme
Holiday-themed races are abundant in the running world, but less well-known events and celebrations may also draw runners and spectators.
The Mardi Gras Marathon, in New Orleans, Louisiana, is one of the better known races building upon the popularity of a local happening. The Derby Festival Marathon, in Louisville, Kentucky, and the Gold Rush Trail 10k and Half-Marathon in Lillooet, British Columbia, Canada, are two more.
A more unusual theme can be found at the Syttende Mai 20-miler, in Stoughton, Wisconsin. The race is part of a festival celebrating the signing of the Norwegian constitution, marking the independence of Norway after a 500-year union with Denmark.
To help market your race, identify something unique to your area and incorporate that theme into your event. It will make it more newsworthy and more memorable for everyone involved.
