Running Governors
Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm plans to run her first 26.2 mile race at the Detroit Free Press Marathon later this year. She is encouraging all Michigan residents to embark on a program of running, walking, biking, or other health activity.
She has mandated the Michigan Governor's Council on Physical Fitness to "Get Michigan Moving" by endorsing events that promote the health benefits of physical activity. Race directors can apply online for inclusion on a list of events that will be promoted statewide.
Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich is a three-time marathoner and the first chief executive of the state to compete in the River-to-River Relay, a unique 80-mile race crossing the southern part of Illinois from the Mississippi River to the Ohio River.
While a member of a U.S. Congress peace mission to Serbia, before his election as Governor, Blagojevich hit the streets for his daily training run at 4:00 a.m., since that was the only time of day he could be sure the U.S. Air Force would not be running bombing missions over Belgrade.
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee shed 110 pounds and now extols the virtue of physical activity. One-time New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, a triathlete and a successful climber of Mt. Everest, is an outspoken fitness advocate.
Find out the recreational activities of elected officials in your area. If they are runners or fitness afficianados, find a way for them to be involved in your event. Their participation can enhance your promotional activities and broaden your appeal to a much wider audience.
