Best Chicago area races
The Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) presented its "Best Race" award to four events, at its January 20 Awards banquet, based on evaluations submitted by runners who participated in each race. All four events excel at the technical standards expected by runners in the Chicago area.
Leading the pack were: Westchester Veterun 5k/10k, in Westchester IL (690 finishers). The Veteran's Day celebration is the final event on the year-long CARA Race Circuit. Race Director Tom Sullivan provides a heated tent for gear check, post-race refreshments, and pre- and post-race thawing out.
Park Forest Scenic 10-miler (and 5k), in Park Forest IL (1,672 finishers). Known for its string quartet at miles 1 and 5, as well as music and spectator participation, Race Director Bud James will host the 30th, and perhaps final, running of this event on Labor Day 2007.
Race That's Good for Life 5k, in Oak Park IL (914 finishers). Race Director Geri Benson stages the event on behalf of the Oak Park Runners Club. The first local event to provide Clydesdale competition, the race also produces one of the best printed race entry forms.
Park Ridge Charity Classic 5k, in Park Ridge IL (367 finishers). Race Director David Loomos offers a very fast course where 30% of all Illinois 5k age group records were set. It starts on a small hill, goes straight out-and-back, and never returns to the hill.
